Dhoom 3

I left home this morning around 8:35 am for an 8:30 am show - you see PVR Cinemas usually plays upto 17 minutes of advertisements into the show time. So an 8:30 show will usually start @ 8:47. And if it is a Yash Raj film (or any big banner one for that matter), it would not have started before 8:55. But more importantly, I had Blackie and Whitey (the dogs in my building) looking @ me eagerly, as if to say, "what's the point of you going for a Dhoom movie. Spend time with us. It may be more exciting".

But the professional in me ignored B&W these calls to stay away from PVR. After all, I had booked tickets 3 days in advance - First Day First Show and all. I ran to get an auto so that I don't miss even a minute of the most exciting of Aamir Khan heists but my best of efforts got me to the hall only by 8:50am. But whaddya know??? PVR apparently knew about my delay. The movie started exactly 30 seconds after my entry. Awesome right!!! But not the feeling I was left with after 173 minutes of Aamir Khan.

In one way (and please don't kill me for this), Dhoom 3 is India's extremely meek answer to Batman. The comparison is made because the series has always centred around villain / anti-hero. That's unfortunately where the similarity ends - althought this time around the makers try harder by making Tumbler (The Batman bike) type motorcycles with BMW S1000Rs. These bikes turn into speedboats at the touch of a button and then into submarines that explode out of the water. Good no?

The story of course begins with a failed (Jackie Shroff - how appropriate) magician who is trying to keep his venture - THE GREAT INDIAN CIRCUS - alive. The Western Bank of Chicago and its manager, however aren't impressed with their latest act (that coincidentally is super stale even though the date is 1st Dec 1990) that involves his son Saahir (Aamir Khan / Siddharth Nigam) getting into a box on stage and then appearing behind the audience - age old - yawn. No surprises though, that the Bank decides to cut their losses and run like hell.

The magician however doesn't take lightly to rejection. And he shoots himself in front of his kid. He leaves them with a poem of sorts that goes something like this,
"Bandein hain hum uske. Hum me kitna dum
Ummedon ke suraj nikle chaaroin ore
Iradein hain fauladi. Himmati har kadam
Apne haathon kismat likhnein aa chalein hain hum"
It is supposed to inspire confidence in his boys. Apparently it does, but it leaves the audience frantically reaching for phones to try and figure out what it actually means.

25 years later, on the back of this poem we find Aamir Khan floating down a building - the Computer Graphics is so bad that it doesn't seem like he is running down - under a downpour of $100 bills. He touches the base of the buildin, gets into the back of a van, is surrounded by the cops but bursts through an explosion on his BMW S1000R. A chase follows - that all but refuses to end - and leaves the cops panting but empty handed. The unexplained part however is that, where does our anti hero keep all the money he steals? He has, however, made it his mission in life to get The Western Bank of Chicago to the ground.

Most of Dhoom 3 has little or no justification. Like another deep random statement, that the magician makes before dying, without any relevance to the rest of the movie, ""Bheekh nahin mangna kabhi. Apni izzat apne haath mein hoti hai hamesha" (never beg. Your self respect is in your hands always - erm who else will have it? Its called SELF respect for a reason). Sequences and scenes and dialogues in Dhoom 3 are inserted as gap fillers and desperate attempts to stretch the movie to 173 minutes. An unnecessary exercise.

Katrina Kaif is simply gorgeous and probably the highest point of the movie. But she doesn't have much screen time other than the almost strip tease she does to prove that she is an, "Asian goddess who sings and dances like liquid electricity" called Alia. A very convulted way to give your name right? But the audiences kind of get what they came in for - and I say this only with respect to Katrina's great looks. The acting and dancing don't give you anything different from what you have seen.

With dialogues like, "Kaam Ka socho. Kaam sutra ka nahin", 3 chases that beg to be finished and not stretched, Zangoora type "circus" that looks more like a ballet and the piece de resistance - AK and AB jousting with Mild Steel pipes instead of lances, Dhoom 3 has hit rock bottom for the franchise. The story is predictable in about 8.5 minutes for those who are mentally challenged and about 5 for the smarter amongst us. AK's performance is far from his best and Uday Chopra should be enough to deter you from paying hard earned money to watch this on screen.

At the end of the Day, Dhoom 3 can be seen on cable when the pirated version plays. No point of paying 50 or 100 bucks to Tata Sky either. And that's not because the story was bad or acting was below par - it was just plain boring. Even the presence of Aamir Khan could do nothing to lift the spirits of this part of the franchise. It was a failure even before it hit the floors. The good news? Dhoom 4 can only be better than this. So let's hope these guys pull their socks up and come back with a bang. 4 on 10. Passe.

A message though, in an otherwise meaningless and pointless movie, "Foreign ke country mein jaise hum karega waise hi opinion banega nahin"? Nice try to give at least 1 message but too little, too late.

  2. Thanks man. That was a real good input and I had been planning to watch the movie on this week end.

Guess I would wait for it to come on some of the channels which as per what you mentioned would be bound to happen by the end of next quarter.

Thx again you saved my days labour and hard earned monies. CHEERS.
