It was only
after I began my research that I realized that Big Hero 6 is actually a comic
book series from Marvel. The comic book
premise is actually quite different from that of the movie. The names of the characters stay the same but
the story is actually nowhere close (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Hero_6).
The Animation
film begins in the city of San Fransokyo (an obvious portmanteau of San
Francisco and Tokyo). Hiro Hamada (Ryan
Potter) enters a local Bot Fight and hustles the biggest fighter of them all
i.e. Yama (Paul Briggs). He is lucky
that his brother Tadashi (Daniel Henney) is around the corner to save him.
Hiro is a 13
year old boy genius who is happy hustling bot fights but thanks to Tadashi, he
gets introduced to the San Fansokyo Institute of Technology (SFIT). It is love at first sight. But when Tadashi dies in an explosion at SFIT,
Hiro is left distraught and goes into a shell. Luckily for him, he finds Baymax,
a medical robot that Tadashi built before his passing.
BH6 is the first
story of the adventures that a blow up robot and a boy genius experience. Knowing Disney, it is far from the last. The franchise (and I hope it builds into one)
has everything from microbots to laser cutters to teleportation to fire
breathing superheroes and everything and anything in between that I may have missed
out.
For those who haven’t
seen the earliest teaser of Big Hero 6, this is the one - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fG9B56QFMvg
– and it is more than sufficient for you to fall in love with Baymax. If you think that the character is super cute
then believe me when I say this, that the voice and dialogue just add
tremendous value just taking it to absolutely adorable, lovable levels.
The voice overs –
which are the life of an animation movie – are simply superb with Scott Adsit
taking the cake here. His robotic and
yet borderline human voice for Baymax only makes you want to jump into the
screen and give Baymax a massive hug. The names of the other characters or
nerds as they call themselves are also quite cute – Go Go, Wasabi and Honey
Lemon to name a few.
Kids are going
to love this for sure and I have a feeling that adults will also have a similar
reaction. And surely enough, Disney will
have a field day in terms of merchandise sales – parents be prepared for the
insane demand in BH6 product immediately after.
That is the only warning you need to go in with. 8 on 10.
Do not miss this one!!!
