Star Trek – Into Darkness

If it weren’t for Star Trek – Into Darkness, my entire weekend would have been gipped (all pun intended).  I am only sorry that I saw Star Trek first and then landed up ruining the rest of my day with some crap that Bollywood decided to dish out as its summer bonanza of sorts.

But the Star Trek fan in me (and the conveniently placed 9 am show) ensured that I watch this movie.  Something that I cannot with conviction ask the readers of this blog to do because there are two kinds of people in this world.  The Star Trek fan and the other who thinks Klingon is the name of a new product that helps you do what the name suggests.  Never mind if you didn’t get that lame joke.

So, if you are a Star Treak fan (read if NCC 1701 means anything to you at all), then you must mae your way to the closest available large screen (larger the better – IMAX recommended) because you will be in for a treat.  J J Abrams (Star Trek, MI 3) takes this part up from where he left it 4 years back with Star Trek (http://kartikr.blogspot.in/2011/03/star-trek.html).

After captaining the ship earlier thanks to his mentor Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood), Kirk finds himself on an island of red on a planet called XXXX that is about to be decimated by a volcanic eruption.  Thanks to Kirk’s heroics, he not only saves the island but also saves Spock (Zachary Qunito) from being converted into a relic on the island.

In the meantime, somewhere in London, a mysterious looking but strong character has emerged.  He approaches an employee of the Enterprise and offers to save his dying daughter in return for a favour – blowing up the Enterprise archive.  What for? Cannot tell you that – else it would be a spoiler.

As always, don’t look at Star Trek for performances but look at the way Abrams builds up the story.  The only performance, if any, would be that of Zachary Quinto who plays Spock to the T.  There is a small part for Leonard Nimoy as Spock Prime and it just brings back some fond memories.

These two parts are meant to build up the genesis of Captain James Tiberius Kirk (Chris Pine) and how he came about to get full control of the Starship Enterprise NCC 1701 (now you know that that meant!!!).  These are both prequels that build up towards the eventual story of Star Trek that we are familiar with.

The build up towards finally stating that memorable line, “Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before”.

Try and watch Part 1 before you see this movie if you can.  Totally worth the dekko.  7.5 on 10.
