Ankur Arora Murder Case

It isn’t for no reason that people say of those who pass away that they have gone to a better place.  If a certain Sidney Lumet was alive today he would have been pushed to the brink of suicide.  But that would definitely not prevent him from rolling in his grave and desperately wanting to get out and murder Suhail Tatari.

Because all Suhail Tatari has done is completely rip one of Sidney Lumet’s best pieces of work to shreds.  The movie that I am talking about is the multiple Oscar (1982) nominated – The Verdict.  It was just sheer coincidence that I happened to watch it a month back and posted my review recently.

It was obvious from the trailers that this movie is a medical malpractice case about a routine operation that went wrong.  I had tweeted about the similarities earlier but while watching the movie, I pretty much realized that it was the same story with a lot of crappy Bollywood masala thrown in.

Dr. Asthana (Kay Kay Menon) is a cocky, leading general surgeon at the XXXX hospital.  He happens to be the best there is.  But on the flipside, he is far away from humility.  Rohan (Arjun Mathur) and Riya (Vishakha Singh) happen to be two of his interns who are also having a not so candid affair and live together.

In walks a rather innocuous case of Ankur Arora, a 7-8 year old who has signs of appendicitis.  A routine procedure supervised by Asthana goes horribly wrong because Ankur happens to take a few biscuits before the surgery and lands up choking on his own vomit.  The hospital tries to cover up the case but Rohan’s conscience doesn’t let him.

This is one movie that I would love to read about from the likes of Sahil Rizwan.  Because there are just so many gaffes that after about 20 minutes it ceases to be funny or intense as it intended to be.  All it lands up doing is making a mockery of the concept of a medical thriller. Sahil Rizwan would have a field day.

Tatari has copied the concept including changing 1 to 9, going into a coma, choking on own vomit – the list is endless.  What is different? Giving everything to the audience on a platter right from scene 1.  There is no element of suspense.  There are unnecessary romance angles and songs thrown in which do nothing to improve the final product.

And to make things worse, the performances are god awful!!! Even someone like Kay Kay Menon seems neurotic and on the verge of a nervous breakdown and not the confident actor that he normally is.  The rest of the cast is not even worth mentioning.  Except Tisca Chopra who shows flashes of brilliance.

In all, Ankur Arora Murder Case, is a criminal waste of your time.  For all you know, you may be able to sue the makers, much like Nandita Arora (Tisca Chopra) does in the movie for malpractice.  Because this is one movie you will take a while to recover from.  Exhausting.  Pathetic.  Not worth wasting your time on.  2 on 10.
