Something Borrowed

Something Borrowed released a couple of years back and lasted for just a week at the cinemas.  I was quite eager to watch it because it has one of my favourite RomCom actresses – Ginnifer Goodwin (He's Just Not That Into You / Once Upon a Time).  So I wasn’t about to let the opportunity pass up when I played on Star World last weekend (if I remember it right).

However, I quickly understood why it survived only for about a week.  It wasn’t a horrible movie by any stretch of imagination.  There was just enough to keep you interested all through the movie.  But that little something wasn’t good enough for it be called a good RomCom.  In fact towards the climax it gets largely convoluted and leaves you wondering if it was just the director living out a childhood fantasy.

Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin) is your average girl next door.  She is pretty but not stunningly gorogeous or hot.  She is intelligent but not nerdy and certainly far away from daft.  She has a heart of gold.  She is a lawyer and that puts her a bit higher on the eligibility scale as well.  But she is still single.

Her best friend Darcy (Kate Hudson) is all what Rachel cannot be.  Hot, outspoken, extrovert, go-getter – everything that gets a man excited.  Including Dex (Colin Egglesfield) – her fiancé.  What she doesn’t know, however is that Dex has always been attracted to Rachel since they were together in law school but never got around to telling her that. What he doesn’t know is that Rachel shares the same attraction.

A chance encounter gets Rachel and Dex into a situation where their carnal (for lack of a better word) desires get the better of them.  Before you know it, they are trying their best to keep their relationship under wraps and pretend that nothing happened. But for how long is the only question.

As mentioned, a decent story line but one that will leave you a bit in knots because of the ending that takes the twists to a level that wasn’t really required.  The cast is your atypical RomCom cast with chocolate boy heroes, a hot heroine and her best friend who you would take home to mom. They are also pretty decent in front of the camera and that makes the ride a bit easier.

But there is really nothing that you will miss if you don’t watch it.  The story, screenplay and dialogues are filled with clichés. The direction is just about average.  There is nothing supremely exciting about the music.  In short, nothing that will make you jump up and take notice.  So if you have the time to spare, you could watch.  You will not feel bad about the decision for sure.  5 on 10.
