The Bourne Supremacy

Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) wakes up yet another day from what can only be described as a nightmare for him – flashes from the past. While this is not new to Jason, he does find some comfort in the fact that he is not alone. He has Marie (Franka Potente) who he caught up with towards the end of Identity.

The setting has now moved to the exotic state of Goa where Marie and Jason have moved to. What they are about to find out is that they have over stayed their welcome in Goa. The Agency has finally caught up with them and Kirill (Karl Urban) has been entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring that they have a happy ending.

A frenetic car chase through the streets of Goa ensues where Marie finds out that her luck has run out. Bourne, however, manages to evade death – yet again. He traces himself back to Pamela Landy (Joan Allen) who is running an operation that has all fingers pointed towards Bourne for the killing of Alexander Neski.

Bourne Supremacy is a fitting 2nd part to the trilogy – and I would be mincing my words when I say that. Paul Greengrass puts paid to my theory that sequels fail primarily because there is lack of consistency thanks to the producers changing directors. What Greengrass does is actually superb to say the least. He picks up where Doug Liman left off and actually takes it to a next level. But then to be fair to myself Liman was the executive producer of both Supremacy and Ultimatum that followed.

The story is only a logical extension from Identity with Bourne trying to establish who he actually is and digging deeper and deeper into Treadstone. But Greengrass gets his team to use some great camera work and awesome editing to create an awesome feeling of intrigue – just what an espionage movie needs

The sequence of Jason Bourne sprinting on a beach in Goa interspersed with Marie going through his diary is a classic example of how a picture can speak a thousand words. Just simple use of some great music and superb editing. Although I do believe that Greengrass probably went a bit overboard with the use of a green hue.

While you may be able to understand the Bourne Supremacy without seeing the earlier part, I would strongly recommend that you watch Identity first. It is not imperative to read the novel however because the movie is a modern day adaptation of the Ludlum Classic. Not everything will be in line but it is still very well made. 8 on 10 again.
