Gangster Squad

Do you like Gangster Movies? Of the likes of say The Untouchables, Bonnie & Clyde a True Story etc.? You get my drift right? One that has a lead villain who you want to get into screen and kill yourself or at least put behind bars if you could. One that has one or a few good cops who are more intent in putting the gangster behind bars.

And along with the good cops are a few bad ones who are turncoats – wolves in sheeps clothing – who cannot be trusted with your walking stick leave alone your life. A bunch of cops and bigwigs who suck upto the gangster and make like miserable for the honest cops. A hot moll of the gangster who wants to get out of the gangster’s clutches but cannot because of fear.

By now, you should have got what I am talking about for certain. And if you are drooling all over your keyboard at the prospect of such a movie then make your way to the closest available cinema hall that is playing Gangster Squad because you are going to have a 2 hour ride that will leave you gasping for breath.

Even if you are not a huge fan but can watch a good v/s evil story (read cops v gangster) then you will enjoy Gangster Squad. Sean Penn plays the inimitable Mickey Cohen who used to be a kick-ass boxer in his heyday. He has left boxing for now and in 1949, he wants to own all of Los Angeles – as a gangster if you were not clear.

Standing in his way is the raspy voiced Chief Parker (Nick Nolte). But Parker cannot do much about Cohen because the ex-pugilist has got the people who matter in his pockets. Judges, Cops, Politicians. You name it. And they would have something to fear about when it comes it Cohen.

Therefore Parker picks Seargent John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) to do his dirty work – discretely of course. Off the books as he says. O’Mara picks up a bunch of 5 people who are the kinds to “shoot first and ask questions later”. Needless to say, the bullets fired from a Tommy gun after all this can equal most predecessors of the movie.

Gangster Squad is an all out gangster man movie. The good part is some really solid direction from Ruben Fleischer. Some really good camera work and hard hitting dialogues also give the movie that much of an edge. But the piece de resistance has to be the acting. Sean Penn of course is the best. But you have to see everyone from Josh Brolin to Ryan Gosling to even someone like Anthony Mackie holding his own.

Gangster Squad is probably the best movie that has released in 2013. I know it has only been a fortnight but Hollywood has a head start over Bollywood this year. And it would seem that the trend will not change too soon. 7 on 10. Worth watching on the big screen.
