Jolly LLB

Jagdish Tyagi aka Jolly (Arshad Warsi) has graduated from Law College Meerut.  As on date, he is a struggling advocate at the local court.  Not too many people know of his existence even in the countryside.  He has been trying to live by that old adage that a lawyer has to be patient enough to get one big case.

Rajpal (Boman Irani) is a hotshot Delhi lawyer.  One of the most successful lawyers of our time.  The prosecution usually is left shaking in its pants with his brand of passionate opening and closing arguments.  As admitted by some judges, he has on occasion even taught some of the judges a bit of law.

Rajpal has no idea of Jolly’s existence till our hero decides to move to the capital to make a better life.  Over a couple of court proceedings on a hit and run case, Jolly decides that there is no point in waiting anymore.  The big way to success and stardom is to take on Rajpal who is the defending lawyer.  If he succeeds, it would be a lottery. Even if he fails, it would give him enough publicity as the lawyer who dared to take on Rajpal.

Jolly LLB gets added to a list of movies where most of the high points of the movie are covered in the trailer itself.  You keep waiting for those dialogues which you know are going to make the crowd giggle and in some cases even laugh out loud. But you don’t need to invest anywhere between 150 to 500 bucks as is the case these days.  You can instead watch the trailer on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0H-qukwqvs

So you will have Arshad Warsi saying, “Your Honour, bachpan mein hindi filmon mein suna tha ki kanoon ke haath bahut lambe hote hain.  Ghanta (beep) lambe hote hain” and the audience breaks into a laugh.  There are 5 to 7 such instances over the 2 hours that the movie lasts for.  Credit to Subhash Kapoor for having kept it that short.

However, there are several instances where cuts could have been made or where the acting went just over the top of where a random song was added only because Bollywood demands a song.  Thankfully Subhash Kapoor doesn’t add any item number and ruin the entire concept and the “goody two shoes” feel of the movie.

However, Jolly LLB not only survives but carries the audience with it thanks to the performances of 3 of India’s finest actors – Arshad Warsi (Thank God he is back after Zilla whatever), the fantastic Boman Irani and my pick for a superb supporting performance – Saurabh Shukla.  Nothing much to see other than these 3.  Amrita Rao is also pretty decent in her bit part.  Watch on DVD or TV when it releases.  6 on 10.
