What to Expect When You're Expecting

There are RomComs with hot women all over the place like sesame seeds on a Big Mac. And there are RomComs with hot PREGNANT women all over the place like sesame seeds on a Big Mac. This one falls in the latter section. I did try to get a look at the trailer before I went to watch What to Expect when you’re expecting (WTEWYE – sounds like a weird computer anagram).

And the trailer was uninspiring to say the least. Should have taken a cue I guess. But then old habits die hard don’t they? The sucker for punishment continues to take the road not travelled – sometimes on a ridiculous whim (makes note to self that he should try and avoid it as the days go by).

There are a whole host of characters in the movie and I will try to describe them over the next few sentences. There is ex race car driver Ramsey (Dennis Quaid) who is forever in competition mode – even with his son Gary (Ben Falcone). Ramsey is with a woman half his age – Skyler (Brooklyn Decker) – who can make your tongue fall to the ground. Gary on the other hand is married to Wendy (Elizabeth Banks) who doesn’t come remotely close to Skyler – so even here the contest continues because both Wendy and Skyler get pregnant at the same time.

Then there is Jules (Cameron Diaz) who is the host of The Biggest Loser and a fling with her choregrapher – Evan (Matthew Morrison) and gets knocked up. There is Alex (Rodrigo Santoro) who is married to Holly (Jennifer Lopez). Holly cannot conceive and has been pushing Alex to consider adoption for quite sometime now and is slowly making progress. And lastly there is Marco (Chace Crawford) & Rosie (Anna Kendrick) who were in high school together but now are competing stall owners at the local park.

I have not had the opportunity to watch any Kirk Jones movies (Everybody’s fine / Nanny McPhee) but I am not brimming with confidence after my experience. The entire cast seemed to be going through the motions more than anything else. As if there was a desperate need to finish the movie on a tight deadline. There was not one sequence where there was any attempt at getting intensity. It was one hell of a drifter of a movie.

I wasn’t the most thrilled about acting, directing, screenplay, editing or anything for that matter. It was a chick flick which wasn’t close to being great. Now you all are aware of my weakness for chick flicks. But I didn’t think this was worth it. 4 on 10 is what I say. Watch at your own risk.

Battleship

Now now Mr. Peter Berg. You definitely gave us an exceptionally good story with The Kingdom some time back but we also distinctly remember one of the worst super hero movies made of all time which came from your table – Hancock. Now instead of gaining back the credibility that you had during your Kingdom days, you have gone right ahead and dabbled with a genre that I have been forced to create because of the severe glut of movies which are talking about the End of the World thanks to alien attacks.

I must however give you credit for getting into attack mode through a medium that has never ever been used before in the history of cinema before – We now have aliens coming to attack us through the ocean. And therefore we now have the US Navy which is led by an admiral played by Liam Neeson (why oh why) whose primary worry is very soon going to be creatures which seem more mechanical than the humanoids that they seem to look like. With technology which makes us look like Neanderthals. And all because some geek from NASA actually sent a signal out which was picked up by these creatures from a different galaxy far far away.

Of course what is going to bother the admiral, who is in between a war exercise, is also his only daughter (Brooklyn Decker) who can do very little to hide her assets (if you know what I mean) even if she wants to. She is in love with Lieutenant Hopper (Taylor Kitsch) who is not doing much to keep himself set in the Navy with his rebellious attitude and short fuse. Even his elder brother (Alexander Skarsgård) cannot do much to prevent the eventuality. But then an alien attack with help Hopper retain his place in the navy.

Har! Har!! Har!!! Har!!!! Har!!!! – ROTFL

My respect for Erich Hoeber & Jon Hoeber who wrote RED (purely for the story) has come crashing down thanks to the apathy that they have shown with the screenplay in Battleship. Will need a lot of effort to gain that back. The partial saving grace comes in the form of excellent special effects in the form of some new creatures which have not been thought of before. Do not look towards the acting for any inspiration if you are thinking about it. Rihanna hasn’t done her career in the movies much good with her insipid attempt. The same analysis applies to the entire cast including the much revered Liam Neeson who will take this mistake to his grave.

And yes, of course there was the music which liberally used AC/DC which gave a fan like me some high points. Overall very passable only because you will miss the effects on the small screen. And this adaptation of the video game is not good enough to spend a few hundred bucks and watch in a theatre. 4 on 10. Would have been marginally better if there was a 3D version.

Just Go With It

Denis Dugan does it yet again. This is the second movie with the Adam Sandler – Denis Dugan combination that I am reviewing and I must say that there has been no improvement whatsoever. It could be a case of the director and actor have built a familiarity and there is no scope for further improvement. I would hazard a more drastic thought that they are probably the same person and that Dugan is just a front that Sandler and eventually gives us a movie that HE wants us to see. For the fifth time, Sandler and Dugan get together and give us a movie that is just about par for the course. In an adaptation of the 1969 classic Cactus Flower that starred Walter Mathau and was also the debut movie for Goldie Hawn. The only difference being that Cactus Flower was extremely tastefully made and is still remembered fondly in most circles. Just Go With It will be forgotten in a few moments after you move out of the hall.

Danny (Adam Sandler) is studying to be a doctor and is therefore a great catch for his would be wife. And the only reason the wife to be is willing to compromise on his horrendous looks (a really massive nose) is that he is a secure investment. And before I forget, she is as promiscuous as can be and has a romp in the sack with her ex boyfriend, the night before the wedding. Unfortunately for her, Danny over hears a conversation that she is having with her friends and is distraught to say the least. But things are about to change for the ugly Danny who decides to drown his sorrows in alcohol at the local bar and gets lucky… really lucky if you know what I mean. At this pivotal moment in his life, the medical student decides to keep his wedding ring and put up a front as being an unhappily married man thanks to an atrocious wife. He also chooses his area of specialization – Plastic Surgery – an extremely lucrative career in the developed world. And the wedding rings ensures that our good doctor continues to get his regular doses in the sack. Needless to say, he gets his nose also fixed soon enough to ensure that he doesn’t have any drawbacks whatsoever. This keeps going on for a few years but soon enough he finds himself not only attracted to but very much falling for Palmer (Brooklyn Decker). But his wedding ring gets him into trouble this time around and to bail himself out, he seeks the help of his very average looking but extremely committed secretary, Katherine (Jennifer Aniston).

If you have seen Cactus Flower you will find JGWI to be a travesty to say the least. If you haven’t seen it, I would strongly recommend that you watch it sooner than later because it is a wonderful movie. Adam Sandler, cannot, is not and will not be a patch on Walter Mathau, a fact that would be endorsed by several people. The same can be said of the rest of the cast also. I would guess that the only difference between Goldie Hawn and Brooklyn Decker would be that on a hotness quotient, Brooklyn is ahead by a country mile and a half. But if it is a question of class, then everyone in Cactus Flower is miles ahead. Now don’t misunderstand me when I say this. I am a genuine fan of remakes but they should be done in the right manner and tastefully. After JGWI, I am compelled to make a request for an organization that screens these remakes before the release. A just about average movie at best. 4.5 on 10 is what I would give it. Watch it on DVD if you have nothing else to do.
