I have started
writing this review a little after the interval of All Is Well. It will
definitely be one of the corniest lines I have ever written in over 5 years of
reviewing but I am at a loss of words as of now. All is definitely not well.
There. I have said it.
Ensuring you watch what is good and hope that you avoid what is bad in the world of cinema

Khiladi 786
Lets start by recounting the entire list.
1. Khiladi – 1992
2. Main Khiladi Tu Anari – 1994
3. Sabse Bada Khiladi – 1995
4. Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi – 1996
5. Mr. & Mrs. Khiladi – 1997
6. International Khiladi – 1999
7. Khiladi 420 – 2000
Am I missing something here? I thought there were more but could find only 7 as of now. It has been 20 years since the first one but there is none that has come remotely close to the excitement that was generated with the first in the franchise.
Lets cut from the gut wrenching excitement of a murder mystery (remember it was 1992 and Khiladi was a good movie then) to a slapstick comedy in which Akshay Kumar pretends to do a Rajnikanth. You know my sentiments when someone tries to ape the great man no knowing that the closest they can come to is be an ape!!! Put these 2 in perspective and you have a disaster in the making.
Lets view some classic examples of atrocious dialogues
1. Duniya mein teen cheez aise hai jo hoti hai lekin koi dekh nahin sakta – Bhooton ka sansaar, sachcha wala pyaar aur Bahattar Singh (AK) ki raftaar (there are 3 things that exist in the world but no one can see – The world of ghosts, true love and the speed of 72 Singh – yes his name is 72)
2. Jilla (District) Malkanpur, Gaon (village) Taasi, Sar par haath rab ka (God’s hand on my head) aur haath pe Saat Sau Chhiyaasi (number 786 – god’s number – on my hands)
3. Bachpan se chhod ta aa raha hoon. Bag lekar school gaya toh master ne kaha School chhod doh. Bat Ball leke cricket khelne gaya toh doston ne kaha cricket chhod doh. Scooter leke ghar se nikla toh padosi ne kaha Malad chhod doh (I will not even bother to translate that one)
At the end of it all, K786 lands up being a cheap imitation of Dabanng and the great man. AK – please remember the next time. There was, is and can be only one Chulbul Pandey and that rule doesn’t change even remotely for Rajnikanth. So respect that space and create one of your one.
The only saving grace – believe it or not – is Himes Bhai’s moosik and his acting (pretty decent). How Mithun Da finds accepts such cheesy roles is beyond me. I can understand that about the rest of the cast especially Shri Raj Babbar. But you are Mithun Da. Why? Why?? Why???
Watch this one if you are a fan of extreme slapstick and AK. Because if you are not, then you may find it difficult to survive. 3 on 10

Bol Bachchan
Like I said earlier in the day. I do not mind Rohit Shetty movies at all. But sometimes they do get to your nerves. And quite a bit. With no offence meant to the monotony or the predictable quality – one such comparison would be Def Leppard. No two Def Leppard songs are too different from the other. Similarly no two Rohit Shetty movies – whether it the totally slapstick Golmaal series or the Bajirao “Atha maajhi satakli re” Singham – can be too different. No offence meant to either Rohit Shetty or Def Leppard fans out there :p.
The difference being, Def Leppard can be heard out for quite some time. After a while of Rohit Shetty, one is compelled to switch channels or even consider moving out of the theatre. Not because it is a badly made movie but simply put because – if you have seen it once, you have seen it all. So essentially, Bol Bachchan is yet another cut copy paste of all his previous ventures with a vastly different star cast.
Shetty of course continues with his tried and trusted Ajay Devgn but adds in the angle of good “friend” Abhishekh Bachchan who seems to have signed up for a limited 2 movies per year – good for him. I can see it only going down to one per year. AB Jr. – I like you. And I mean it. But get out of the shadow of Yuva. You will not be able to repeat such a performance. Live with it and go out there and just be natural. It will help.
Prithviraj Raghuvanshi (Devgn) is the be all and do all in a village called Ranakpur in Rajasthan. He is widely respected and feared. Respected for his sense of justice and huge heart. Feared for his affinity for the English Language. So “Chhati ka doodh yaad dila doonga” translates to “I will make you remember Milk number 6”. You get the drift right.
Shastri (Asrani) is one of his “subjects” so to say who is a close family friend of Abbas (AB Jr.) and Sania (Asin) from Delhi. Abbas and Sania lose a property dispute case against their paternal uncle. With nothing to lose they come to Ranakpur on Shastri’s insistence. When Abbas breaks into a disputed temple to save a drowning child, Prithvi is impressed and gives him an accountants job that pays 35K per month. But to ensure no major communal issues, Ravi (Shastri’s son) introduces Abbas as Abhishek Bachchan. The comedy of errors ensues.
Rohit Shetty has not made any bones at all about the obvious inspiration he has drawn from Golmaal. If there was one person who is deeply influenced by the 1979 comedy it would be Shetty. The entire story of Bol Bachchan moves into a double role for Jr. B – one with a moustache and the other without. Need I say more? Go back to paragraph 2 of this review if you have forgotten what I have written earlier.
Watch it if you have nothing better to do – 6 weeks from now when it airs on TV or Tata Sky Showcase. You may like a bit of the slapstick humour that Shetty is famous – or should I say infamous for. 4 on 10 despite a warm welcome to one of my all time favourites on screen – Archana Puran Sing. Good to see her back with a performance typical of her.

Housefull 2
Amongst the so called Dirty Dozen, I have been wondering all the way during the build up to what I was quite confident would be yet another appalling effort from Sajid Khan, about 4 people. Of these 4, one Randhir Kapoor, I have never been too much in awe of but why would Rishi Kapoor, Mithun Chakraborty and Boman Irani find themselves signing a Sajid Khan movie? Is there so much dearth of good quality movies around for these great names who have done so much for Indian cinema and really have nothing much to prove. Money talks I guess.
Amongst the younger breed, I can completely understand the reason for an Akshay Kumar and John Abraham being present here. There is not much of acting talent there and comic timing has betrayed AK a long time back. So anything that comes their way is good enough I guess. Shreyas Talpade is again a victim of “Money Talks”. Ritesh Deshmukh – sincere as always but I guess this is what he will continue to get as offers and this is what he will take.
The slapstick story (I know I know I am stating the obvious) of Housefull 2 has nothing to do with the first part if that’s any solace. This time around, we have Sunny (AK) & Max (John) who are the crooks from college and sworn enemies thanks to a misunderstanding involving a woman. On the other hand we have close friends Jai (Talpade) and Jolly (Ritesh) who are sons of rich folks – Jolly being the son of the super rich business tycoon JD (Mithun Da). Jai’s father gets insulted by Kapoor & Real Son (Rishi) when they visit him to ask for the kapoor daughter’s hand in marriage. Jai’s father suffers a heart attack and is in coma. Jai seeks revenge and pays Max 50K pounds to pose as Jolly and then dump the daughter at the last minute. One Jolly leads to another and before you know we have 4 Jollys and a minor headache.
There is not much acting or directing or screenplay or dialogues or editing or anything that would go into making a movie that is on display in Housefull 2. It is once again a self obsessed effort from a man who listens to very few as they say – Sajid Khan. I guess the fact that none of his movies have truly flopped and the fact that there were enough morons in the hall laughing their guts out indicates that there is enough of a fan following for his brand of ridiculously painful comedy. More power to the guys like Sajid Khan I say who listen to their smart brains more than the call to make quality cinema. My rating will hold little or no bearing on the success of the movie. 2 on 10 is what I would give on a good day.
