Youngistaan

Lets us start this review by paying homage to one of the finest actors that our country has ever seen – Farooq Sheikh.  In his last on-screen release, Youngistaan, Farooq Saab plays the role of Akbar.  He is the Personal Assistant to the Prime Minister of the country.  The comfort with which he essays his role brings a tear to your eye because you will never be able to see his class on screen in anything new.  Thank goodness for DVDs.

Yamla Pagla Deewana 2

Sangeeth Sivan takes over from Sameer Karnik, 2 years after the latter gave us a movie that was in terms of quality, nothing worth writing home about.  However, there were some moments attributed to the lead trio which ensured that the movie didn’t flop.  YPD2 is no different.

Jayantabhai Ki Luv Story

Yet another joke that has been doing its rounds of late and is so damn true its not funny at all!!! The best way to hide your porn collection on your PC is to name the folder – THE VIVIEK OBEROI COLLECTION.  Oh I’m sorry.  Vivek. He has dropped the “I” from his name but it seems to have made little difference to his luck.

Kya Super Kool Hain Hum

Before you go to watch this movie, have a look at the video of the attempt that the lead stars have made towards promoting the movie in this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&v=dJ6Ge5ITCUA&NR=1

Let me assure you that it is nowhere remotely close to whatever these guys claim and that too in the most unconvincing manner. The closest thing to the truth is in one of the dialogues of the movie itself, “Hum log marne nahin waale hain. Kyonki yeh ordinary movie hai” (We aren’t going to die because this is an ordinary movie). By calling it ordinary they were indeed glorifying themselves just a little notch.

If you are one to get your kicks from really cheap slapstick humour – something on the lines of American Pie – then Kya Super Kool Hain Hum is a brilliant movie for you. It is an all out sex comedy with not one line exists where you could use the phrase, “No pun intended”. Lets sample a few of them.

“Aaj mere shareer ka sirf ek hissa kaala hai…… meri aankhen” (Only one part of my body is black as on date… my eyes)
“Mera Naam Bhagyashree Rajshree Mitali Joshi hai. Mere friends mujhe BJ kehke bulaate hain. Arre… yeh sunke aap ka muh kyon khul gaya” (My name is Bhagyashree Rajshree Mitali Joshi. My friends call me BJ. Why have you opened your mouth on hearing this? – apologies for the crude literal translation)

Many more such corny one liners and if these two have caught your fancy then KSKHH is just the right movie for you on a Sunday afternoon. Not much of a story either. Just 2 losers – one a struggling actor (and he calls himself one) and the other is an up and coming DJ. The former is called Adi (Tusshar) and the latter Sid (Ritiesh). They keep getting themselves in into all sorts of trouble thanks to their loose tongue more

And then there are the two pieces of eye candy. Simran (Neha Sharma) and Anu (Sarah Jane Dias) who do everything from rejecting marriage proposals to pretending to be lesbian and having a wardrobe malfunction in between for good measure. That they are absolutely gorgeous is a huge saving grace to themselves and the movie.

Do not, however, go there expecting any performances of any sort. There is some decent music for certain including the hugely popular “Garden Garden Ho Gaya”. Overall as mentioned earlier – slapstick. Not my kinds. But you may like it. 4 on 10.

Teri Meri Kahaani

The last time a movie released with the initials TMK was the 24th December 2010. The twitter hashtag of that movie was actually changed to TMKN. I think Teri Meri Kahani has retained it as TMK. And the initials haven’t proved to be remotely as bad as the earlier movie landed up being. If you aren’t aware of the earlier blockbuster – in the literal sense of the word, it busted at the box office – it was called Tees Maar Khan. Kunal Kohli’s TMK however turns out to be a mush gusher from frame 1 without any undue delays whatsoever.

Spread over 102 years (yeah... a really long time), this TMK can be a fantastic question for a Match the following – the kinds we used to get in school. Match Rukhsar/ Aradhana / Radha with Krish / Javed / Govind. The correct answer would be the love stories of Rukhsar : Govind, Radha : Krish (the most obvious) and Javed : Aradhana. I wouldn’t expect you to know that unless u have seen the movie.

The first is set in a 1960s Bombay (that’s what it was called then and that’s what quite a few of us prefer to call it even now) which involves an aspiring musician who has no income and has put his life savings to stay in an expensive city for 3 months. He meets a gorgeous actress Rukhsar on the vintage train ride from Pune. Instant chemistry is followed by a predictable love triangle.

The second is set in 2012 London where Krish has broken up with his girlfriend Meera (Neha Sharma) on his birthday but bumps into Radha (how corny) over a case of alleged phone thievery. And as it happens only in the movies, they spend the entire night across several London night spots. Instant Chemistry. Another predictable Love Triangle. This time with Social Networking thrown in.

The third is set in 1910 Lahore where Javed is a vintage Casanova to who has no trouble unlocking the doors of nubile and gullible women. He believes that the Brits are actually doing a good job with India during the Raj. But all of this till he meets Aradhana as he is fleeing from the Brit officers after doing one of their daughters. Instant Chemistry. Thankfully no love triangle.

Good music from Sajid Wajid and the average soppy direction from Kunal Kohli are the hallmarks of Teri Meri Kahaani. Shahid Kapoor continues to raise doubts about his gene pool. Priyanka Chopra (and this is a thoroughly biased opinion) continues to dazzle with her looks and acting (ok I may have lied just a bit there). Not much of a rest of the cast. Kunal Kohli is also quick to take credit for a movie that has been inspired by the 2005 Taiwanese movie – Three Times.

If you like the soppy Kunal Kohli types morantinc Romaaans movies then this is the right way to spend Sunday afternoon. If not, then avoid it like the plague. 5 on 10 because it was reasonably made, not finished too well and the fact that I am sucker for romance.
