Bhaag Milkha Bhaag

If there was any doubt about whether Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s family had a long-standing feud with that of Milkha Singh then it cannot be more obvious.  I say this because of the several methods available for revenge, ROM has resorted to the one that is cheapest, meanest and downright scumbaggish.  He has successfully destroyed the legacy of who “was” probably India’s best athlete to date.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag lost me in the first frame itself where the compromise in finishing stares blatantly at your face.  Milkha’s (Farhan Akhtar) entry is set to background of a green screen that cannot look more obvious.  The crowds at the Olympic Stadium in the background look and feel ask fake as the movie landed up being eventually.

After the debacle of the Rome Olympics, Milkha goes into a shell and refuses to take part in the upcoming “Friendship Games” with our neighbours to the west.  And that my forms the premise of The Flying Sikh’s decision to look over his shoulder in the race of his life.  A memory of how his family was slaughtered during the partition.  So if someone says “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag” he hallucinates.  A fact that no one notices all through his star studded career.  Not just downright ridiculous but blatantly insulting!!!

And then there are the finer nuances of how well chiseled Farhan Akhtar looks with his 8 packs and bursting viens.  Athletes are lanky and fit – not goddamn models.  Of course Milkha also apparently ran his races in Adidas spikes and practiced in the Ladakh Desert wearing his Timberland / Salomon shoes which were sent back to him in time just for this purpose.

By now, you would have seen several casting gaffes as well.  Dalip Tahil as Pandit Nehru will make you split your sides in scenes meant to be serious.  Sonam Kapoor giggling drew an equally atrocious giggle from someone in the audience and a round of applause followed.  No one in the entire movie acted or appeared to act – with the exception of the ever reliable Pawan Malhotra who was outstanding.

Divya Dutta’s nails were clearly manicured by some enterprising beauty parlour who had set up shop at the border because they knew of the money they could make.  Ditto for Sonam Kapoor as well whose make up is visible even through the strands of hair that keep falling over her face with an intent to of course show an unkempt village belle.  Meesha Shafi’s role is restricted to being a flight attendant and wearing a swimsuit.

To me, the kicker in the shitter was when Stella (Rebecca Breeds) asks the Indian contingent, “Will you be relaxing today”? The response, “No ji, Milkha Singh”.  Prasoon Joshi – were you on dope when you wrote this? You didn’t think even once that it was a rank bad insult to someone who is a Padma Shri?

ROM can send me his address and I will definitely send him a copy of Chariots of Fire.  That is how you make a biopic on an athlete Shri Mehra.  At no point of time do you insult people of national / international importance.  Whatever personal vendetta you have against him – take it somewhere else.  3 on 10.  And yes, when the world said ROM was bad, I said otherwise.  Maybe it is time to turn the tables. Disappointed.

  1. Hi Bangs, this is what i have to say about BMB...trust me no body paid me for this...

"BHAG MILKHA BHAG " -- Every day we have so many reasons to give thanks, but do we really Thank anyone ? Every day we have so many reasons to say Sorry; we must have hurt someone or forgotten something, do we really say Sorry?
I start by saying Sorry to The Great Extraordinary Flying Sikh – “Sirji” Milkha Singh...for forgetting the pain and agony he has gone through in achieving this feat for India during tough times and under tougher circumstances.
Then i Thank ROMP (Rakyesh OmPrakash) for making us realize through this movie that sky is the limit for those having will power, dedication and hard work. Hats- off to him for envisioing this beautiful biopic movie. ROMP is best in stitching, blending stories from 2 era's; in this case The Partition of India and that with the athlete life of Milkha....he does it seamlessly and with great impact. There are some scenes which touches your heart. There are times where the movie slowly seems to be losing the grip but then ROMP has ensured that you are back at the edge of your seat.
The movie is a hit because of the result of blood, sweat and tears...we have heard this as an idiom...in this movie you can see, feel and taste it too.
Photography and camera work is at its best....sweaty body, heavy breathing sounds, muddy boots (sponsored by adidas :-) ) , speedy feet movement on the track is gripping and beautifully captured.
What do i say about ‘Mashallah’ kammar 28" Farhan Akhtar!! Mind blowing hard work, will power and dedication. He has done full justice to the character, fully charge of the role which left the real Milkha too in tears...He is beating Aamir Khan too i must say as a perfectionist.
Good to see Yesteryear actors like K K Raina, Dalip Tahil, Pavan Malhotra (Nukkad-Hari), Divya Dutta and they are marvellous.
Prasoon Joshi lyrics are hi fi difficult to humm or sing but very peotic and rocking background score and music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy.
While our parents were proud of great actors like Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Guru Dutt of their times...we can narrate to our kids and feel proud about actors of our era i.e Farhan Akhtar, Aamir Khan or Hrithik Roshan.

    1. Hi Prakash

First of all, apologies for the delay in response. I have to check for comments every time there is one posted. Dont get an auto update. Will check more often.

Since you have been simple and objective in your inputs, i shall choose to be the same.

My views on BMB are my personal views that are shared by some of my friends. Most people have had violent reactions to them. If you watch Chariots of Fire, you will understand the benchmark that i have in mind for a movie about athletics.

ROM made Delhi 6 and i kid you not when i say that i watched it 5 times in the theatre and made it my personal objective over 2 months that i drag as many people as i could into the theatres. The movie bombed. Why? simply because people could not understand or digest the message.

ROM now decides to go all commercial in Va Va voom style and gives 2 hoots to facts - after all, facts should never come in the way of a good story right? The result - the country is raving about it.

Fact - Milkha lost the olympics due to a bad strategic call of running too fast in the first 250 meters of the race. When you have bent the truth in the first few minutes, you have unfortunately lost my attention for the rest of the movie.

Regretably, the nation has lapped it up. And much like most other entertainers, this nation will continue to lap up below par cinema because that i how we have been bought up. And when a billion people are saying its a great movie then of course i cannot be saying it is not. right?

My opinions on BMB are my views. I wrote what i felt while watching the movie. I write about the movie, the way the movie speaks to me. It is in no way a judgement or an enforcement of opinion. It takes all kinds to make this world. I am one of that kind who says things as they see it. You know me for over 20 years now. Surely you know that aspect about me.

Thanks for the inputs. Keep the comments coming. I am sure that i have a long way to go and lots to learn. Anything that can help is most welcome.

      Cheers

      Kartik

PS - i am not paid for my reviews either. Wonder where that came from?

  3. A seriously pathetic review... Comes across as a really amateur attempt of reviewing a movie!

    First things first...
There is nothing insulting in the movie! Milkha Singh was consulted before the movie began. He himself gave his inputs for the screenplay. Its completely his story. So this is not some personal vendetta of ROM against the great legend. If a person who didnt have any means to get educated and learn english in 1950s, and cannot answer a foreigner when she asks him if he is relaxing then its completely fine! How and Why is it insulting???
This is also the first review of this particular movie I am reading that only talks about appearances of the cast members rather than their actual performances. Did you seriously kept looking at how perfectly manicured are nails of Divya Dutta and how are sonam's hair styled??? Seriously??? Veins protruding from Farhan's body??? And not a single word on his performance which would be a front-runner at next year's national awards? Most of the people I know were deeplt moved by Divya Dutta's portrayal rather than being distracted by her 'manicured' nails.
The only blemish is the length of the movie which the editor could brought down by cutting a few songs. But still I believe some stories warrant the time they consume and BMB is once such.
No one cares what you think of ROM. He has made a good movie and that is what matters. Your 3/10 is something that your reviews deserve. Or rather even they dont! 1/10 I would say! And I am being generous.

    2. This is not about keeping people happy! I understand that you are entitled to your opinion. Its just that the way you have written your review is what drove me to criticize your review. BMB, even if you didnt like it, doesnt deserve the kind of review that you gave it. I dont mind you giving it 3/10. Even some other sites gave similar. But you yourself check it again. Its a disgustingly written review!

    3. Dear Anonymous - please advise, how I should have written the view for a 3 on 10 rating? Your argument that Milkha was consulted is warranted, but do you seriously believe that he was doing push ups on an Australian beach, a day before the big race? My point is that. Creative liberties kept aside, it was really sad to see the way the topic was treated. There was no importance given to keeping it true. The focus was on getting the audience excited and raking in the big bucks. My debate - both could have been done. And we'll at that.
In short, lets agree to disagree on this one.
