A Little Bit of Heaven

Star World seems to be on a Kate Hudson spree for their segment called Movie Magic.  Sometime back it was Fools Gold.  The week before last we saw that RomCom titled Something Borrowed.  And last week it was this Romance / RomCom movie called A Little Bit of Heaven.

The common part in all of the movies was Kate Hudson in a rather boisterious roles.  This time around she plays the role of a commitment phobic Marley Corbett (Kate Hudson).  She is willing to spend a lot of time with her list of squeezes but not willing to take the next step in the relationship for reasons best known to her.

Marley is a successful advertising executive.  One who gets away with telling her clients that they have their brains in the wrong place (oh the extents to which film makers go to build heroes/heroines).  She also happens to be extremely successful at her job and goes on to become the youngest VP in the advertising world (sigh… again).

But, Marley’s sedentary and successful lifestyle is set to come crashing down when she is diagnosed with Colon Cancer – that’s cancer in the bum for those who are unaware.  When no treatment options present themself, she cashes in on her insurance and decides to live her last few days with people who matter.

Director, Nicole Kassell, gives us a story that is funny in parts and yet quite poignant.  At times you catch yourself smiling but then you realize that the lead character has very little time left.  Yet, at the end of the day, it is a happy movie and not a sad one.  Kassell does a good job in building the characters and keeping the tempo up.

I love Kate Hudson.  Always have.  On second thoughts maybe I love the characters that she plays.  But the fact that she is able to do it so convincingly makes me believe that apple doesn’t fall far from the tree in real life as well.  She is as good as I have seen her in any of her previous RomComs.

A Little Bit of Heaven is the kind of movie you would watch on a Sunday afternoon snuggled up with someone that you love and then discuss what the other person would do if you die.  And then feel good about the fact that you have that someone and more time to live with that special someone unlike Marley.

I don’t think it is the kind of movie that will make you teary eyed by any stretch of imagination.  It intends to tell you to celebrate life when we have it.  And it achieves that intent quite well I must say.  But is it a must watch? Not really.  Watch it on a lazy Sunday afternoon when there is nothing better playing.  5 on 10.
