Thor : The Dark World

In my review of Thor (http://kartikr.blogspot.in/2011/05/thor.html), around 2.5 years back, I had gushed and gushed and if that wasn’t sufficient, gushed even more about my love for Natalie Portman.  I must say that she still makes me go weak in my legs but the “love” has moved on.  Sorry Natalie – I couldn’t get myself to wait for you indefinitely ;).

The story provides something new with a back story from many many moons ago where the world was ruled by the dark elves.  They were led by Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) who aims to rule the 9 realms by sending them into darkness.  For this, he was to use a weapon called Aether (pronounced Ether).

To do this, he has to wait for the alignment of all the 9 realms – something that happens once every 5000 years.  Malekith almost achieves the desired effect but is foiled by Asgardians who arrive just in time, defeat the dark elves and hide the Aether where no one can find it.

Unfortunately, Another 5000 years have passed thence and the dreaded alignment is due anytime now.  And like in most superhero movies, a series of events lead to the Aether being released and Malekith waking up again in time to stake his claim to rule the world.  This time, another Asgardian – Thor (Chris Hemsworth), stands in his way.

Thor : The Dark World exceeded my expectations on several counts.  My rating of Thor was a 5 on 10 – average flick is what I thought.  This one is much better.  To begin with, the special effects are truly amazing.  Probably better in 2D because there is not much that 3D actually offers as an add-on.

Chris Hemsworth has indeed come a long way in terms of acting capabilities and I would actually hazard a guess that his performance in Thor was probably what the character was required to do and not an indication of his capabilities.  Sadly, Natalie Portman remains under-utilized and this one is more of a Hemsworth show.

The fight sequences are really good too.  Watch out for a 2 minute sequence where Frigga (Rene Russo) takes on Malekith in an attempt to protect Jane Foster (Natalie Portman).  Wonderful action choreography there.  Another notable mention would be Tom Hiddleston as Loki that provides some additional spice in a small but pivotal role.

Thor : The Dark World is an entertaining flick for all ages.  It isn’t important to have seen the first part either.  It will not impact your understanding in any manner.  It is predictable alright but very well executed.  One of the few times that a sequel is better than the first part.  Also, watch out for the sneak peek into the next part at the end that involves one of Hollywood’s finest actors.  7 on 10.  Watch it.
