Machete Kills

If a movie makes it to an International Film Festival, then there has to be something of at least academic interest in it.  Right? Machete Kills was obviously put into the Mumbai International Film Festival with that intent in mind.  But it turned out to be an absolutely brilliant entertainer from Frame 1.

For those who aren’t aware of the genre of this movie, refer to my review of Machete (http://kartikr.blogspot.in/2013/11/machete.html) where I have spent a good amount of space and more importantly given enough links to help you understand the genre better.  If you still need more information, there is google baba and wiki uncle ;)JJJ.

If you likes Machete (2010) then you are bound to love Machete Kills.  For one thing, it is insanely funnier.  It begins with a sneak preview of Machete Kills Again… In Space (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpcBMXIqGUI).  I can assure you that most people in the hall fell off their seats with this.  Its due for release in 2014 for those who want to know.

Machete (Danny Trejo) is back to save the world from a suspected nuclear heist along with Agent Sartana Rivera (Jessica Alba).  Agent Rivera gets killed in the bargain and Machete is hung as in literally hung from the ceiling.  But Machete cannot die!!!  As he is being hung, the Texas Ranger gets a call from… wait for it… The President of The United States (Carlos Estevez – better known as Charlie Sheen).

The President asks Machete to help the US with capturing famed militant Mendez (Demian Bichir) who was responsible for the stolen nuclear heads.  Mendez is a good guy who suffers from multiple personality disorder.  One of them is a terrorist.  He turns back into his regular self ever so occasionally.

Along the way, Machete has to deal with exotic hurdles such as Desdemona (Sofía Vergara) and her band of girls.  But Machete has help from his previous partner in crime Luz aka Shé (Michelle Rodriguez) albeit with only one eye.  What he isn’t prepared for is The Cameleón (Walton Goggins / Cuba Gooding Jr. / Lady Gaga / Antonio Banderas).

Machete Kills is peppered with out of the world concepts like the Cameleón who can change face ad nauseum – almost like the T-1000 (Terminator 2).  There are hilarious dialogues like “Machete Happens”!!! You cannot but help hold your stomach because you are laughing so hard it hurts.

Machete Kills is made with the sole purpose of providing mindless entertainment.  As I have always maintained, I am all for this provided you do not compromise on the quality of execution.  Robert Rodriguez does just that.  And for that, I will encourage you to watch this movie.  It is great adult fun.  7 on 10.
