2 Guns

It has been a while since we have seen a movie that has some mindless shooting (some accurate shooting as well) in a climax that involves blowing up $43.125 million. Hey wait a minute. We have not seen any movie that involves blowing up that kind of money. But we have seen movies that have mindless shooting towards the end in the hope that the bullets find some target or the other. Sorry for the spoiler to begin with but that to me was the high point of 2 Guns.

Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Steven Grant, 2 Guns is the story of Robert "Bobby" Trench (Denzel Washington) and Michael “Stig” Stigman (Mark Wahlberg).  Both are in an undercover operation, not knowing that the other was undercover in the first place. The former is a DEA agent who wants to put big time drug lord Papi Greco (Edward James Olmos) behind bars. The latter is a Naval Intelligence Officer who has been told to track down where and how Greco keeps his money.

Bobby tries to get Greco the drug way but when that doesn't work, they decide to rob the bank where he keeps his money and get him on tax evasion charges. He asks for help from former girlfriend, Deb (Paula Patton) who is also a DEA Agent – only not covered – I’m sorry, not undercover. Bobby and Stig are unaware that the amount of money they are going to rob is not $3 million but it is actually the staggering amount mentioned above. Of course the question now arises, "Whose $43.125 million have they stolen"?

2 Guns promises a lot to begin with but ends up being a simple average ordinary everyday action movie. The story attempts to be ever so slightly different but the screenplay, dialogues and narration are no different from any other movie that has a Mexican Drug Lord and the DEA trying to put him into jail. There are some attempts too at getting some humour but even those dialogues fail to give the movie a certain punch that would require you to watch on 70mm.

However, Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg make sure that the movie is kept alive. Both are at their confident best. Wahlberg has his care a damn gait and Denzel his characteristic swagger and accent. Paula Patton's role is restricted to being the only available eye candy. A necessary evil to ensure some female participation in the story. One that made little or no impact. In all, 2 Guns is what most of you would call "time pass". But it was kept tight in most parts. Watch if you have nothing better to do over the weekend. 5 on 10.
